The warm cup on the trail
Five small tricks that keep your coffee hot from the kitchen to the forest lake.

There is something special about the first sip of coffee when you are a little way out. Your hands are cold, the air is crisp, and the cup is still hot. Here are five simple tricks that make the difference.
1. Preheat the mug
Pour boiling water into the mug and let it stand for a minute before adding your coffee. The steel takes far less heat from the drink when it is already warm.
2. Fill it to the top
Air at the top cools. A full mug stays hot noticeably longer than a half-full one.
3. Close the lid straight away
Most heat is lost in the first few minutes. Click the lid on as soon as the coffee is in.
4. Keep it close to your body
An inside pocket or a backpack close to your back helps in the cold. The insulation does most of the work — you do the rest.
5. Choose the right size
For an hour-long walk, 340 ml is perfect. Out all day? Bring a large insulated bottle and refill your mug along the way.
Enjoy the walk — and the first sip.
